PORTWEST HEAD OFFICE, WESTPORT, CO. MAYO

Portwest is a globally recognised brand and manufacturer of protective workwear and weather-proof leisure clothing. It’s proposed head office is located on Roman Island, a promontory reaching out into Clew Bay on the western periphery of Westport in Co. Mayo. This exposed and dramatic coastal location echoes the nature and function of Portwest’s products. The site was reclaimed from the sea using the abandoned ballast of a 150 years of shipping activity at Roman Island and was, until recently, occupied by the towering Pollexfen Mill complex dating from 1904.

The new office building is designed to accommodate over 150 employees in an open plan office arrangement organised over three/four floors above a ground floor accommodating the office reception, a public café and exhibition space. The architectural form and expression of the building draws inspiration from the fissured geology of local rock outcrops, sea stacks and from the iconic costal tower houses which are characteristic of this part of the Ireland’s Atlantic shorelines.
